Grass Carp Found in Tittabawassee River Near Lake Huron

Officials from the Michigan DNR found a grass carp capable of reproducing near the Dow Dam in Midland County’s Tittabawassee River on March 17. It is the first time this type of invasive fish has been discovered in a tributary of Lake Huron. Only 13 sterile grass carp have been found in the lake’s waters in the last 30 years, according to mLive.com. Grass carp are considered detrimental to the Great Lakes because their plant-heavy diet can contribute to algal bloom growth. The Michigan DNR plans to develop surveys in the area’s waters to find out where the carp were produced. Studies have shown that Lake Erie and tributaries surrounding it have had grass carp spawning.
