There’s a new mighty addition to the Great Lakes Children’s Museum in Traverse City, Michigan. Visitors can now check out the “Mini-Mac,” a scaled-down version of the “Mighty Mac” Mackinac Bridge that connects Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas.
While the actual Mackinac Bridge is the fifth longest suspension bridge in the world, with a total length of 26,372 feet (about 5 miles), the steel-framed Mini-Mac stands at approximately 13- by 20-feet. Currently, there is a mural of the Straits of Mackinac, based on drawings by local art students behind the bridge. Eventually, it is expected that visitors will be able to actually cross the bridge to access the Children’s Museum.
Traverse City-based construction company Team Elmer’s and Onaway-based steel fabricator Moran Iron Works designed, built and installed the bridge. For more information, visit greatlakeskids.org.
