Chicagoans got a sneak peak on Wednesday, September 7 of a new environmental documentary. The film, “Making Waves: Battle for the Great Lakes,” is about aquatic invasive species in the Great Lakes and efforts to control them.
For the past century, more than 180 invasive species of plants, fish, invertebrates and bacteria have made the Great Lakes home, slowing changing the ecology of the world’s largest freshwater ecosystem. The documentary was produced by Great Lakes Media and sponsored by The Nature Conservancy, the Chicago Marine Heritage Society and the BoatU.S. Foundation.
The Chicago screening took place at the Shedd Aquarium and was open to the public. Following the screening, audience members were treated to a Q&A session with the filmmakers, the film’s narrator Bill Kurtis, and Dr. Philip Willink, a Shedd senior research biologist.
If you missed event, you can catch it on PBS stations. In Chicago, the documentary will air as a two-part series on September 11 and 18 at 5 p.m. In Michigan, New York, Minnesota, Wisconsin and potentially Ohio, the film will air throughout the fall and next spring.
