Chicago native and MBIA Hall of Fame inductee Herb Eldean of Eldean Shipyard in Lake Macatawa was posthumously awarded the Ray L. Underwood Lifetime Achievement Award for 2022 from MBIA for his contribution to the recreational boating industry throughout his lifetime. He will be honored at the Recreational Boating Educational Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on November 30.

“Because of their longevity, dedication, and personal integrity, Herb Eldean earned wide recognition within our industry and the respect of their professional peers,” says MBIA Chairman Tom DenHerder. “The MBIA Board voted unanimously to honor Herb with this, one of our most prestigious, awards.”

Since his youth on the Chicago waterfront, Eldean grew up fishing, sailing and helping his father operate the Monroe Street Harbor. He and his brother purchased Eldean Shipyard & Yacht Sales in 1973, and led it to earn the “Marina of the Year” award in 1995. Throughout the years, Eldean encouraged learning and education, and was an avid proponent of the boating industry.
