After parts of a wreck turned up on a Lake Michigan beach north of Ludington, Michigan, the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum investigated. The debris was part of one of five schooners that wrecked in the lake between 1841 and 1862, according to WOODTV.com.
“The waters around Big Sable Point and around Ludington are quite notorious and dangerous, especially during that time period for sailing vessels,” Eric Harmsen, the museum’s manager, told local news station WWTV. “We know of about 20 vessels that ran aground right in that area, so it could have been several of those.”
However, with a high concentration of ships buried in the lake’s waters and no photos of any of the five the wreckage could belong to, it has been hard for the museum, in partnership with MSRA, to identify the exact ship.
