The S.S. Clifton, a whaleback ship that vanished in Lake Huron in 1924, has long topped the lists of Great Lakes shipwreck hunters; however, it seems that the search is over. The Bristol Herald Courier reports that deep diver David Trotter claims to have found the Clifton in September 2016.
Trotter told papers he found the ship about 100 miles south of where many commonly believed the ship had gone down. He says he kept the discovery secret so his dive team could explore and document the wreck this past summer. Despite nine separate expeditions to the wreck over the summer, Trotter says the cause of the ship’s sinking remains a mystery.
