Irish Boat Shop will continue its “Women at the Helm” networking events that proved so successful in 2025 at the Traverse City Shop. The program will expand its offering in 2026, offering workshops, educational and experiential events to help women become more actively involved in boating and gain confidence in their knowledge base.
The next event is Thursday, March 5 from 5:30-7:30pm at the Grand Traverse Yacht Club in Traverse City. “Sailing with a Spouse and Family – Tactics to Keep it Fun for All” will be led by sailing educator Katie McGauley, and will offer helpful advice and sailing tips, along with a healthy dose of fun and laughter for aspiring women sailors.
Events are casual and informative, offering valuable information on topics that women have provided as priorities, as well as opportunities to network and connect with other women in the boating world.
“In most women’s experience, boating is a male-dominated sport. We are invited to go along, bring family, food and friends and be a passenger, but we seldom have the chance to take the helm,” explains Susan Stewart, Irish Boat chair who grew up boating with her father and founder of Irish Boat Shop, Dave Irish. “Although that was not my experience growing up, I’d like to help more women be comfortable and happy at the helm. Our workshops are meant to do just that.”
