A shipwreck from over 100 years ago has been found in Lake Huron’s lower Georgian Bay. The J.H. Jones was carrying general freight, a brick-molding machine, a sleigh, and about 20 barrels of coal on November 22, 1906, when it was lost in a storm with 30 people on board. The vessel was headed to Lion’s Head, Ontario. After the wreck, only two lifeboats and one body were found.
After several attempts to find the wreckage were unsuccessful, divers saw images on video on July 1 and found the Jones near the ship’s destination. The hull is mostly intact, while the steam whistle has stayed in place.
