Lake Michigan Rises by 4 Feet

By July 5, 2016No Comments

Beach-goers on Lake Michigan might have to contend with less sand and more water this summer. According to the Army Corps of Engineers, the lake has risen 4 feet since January 2013. These high tides have contributed to diminishing beaches and damage along Chicago’s lakefront walking paths. However, officials are not too worried: Water levels usually rise and fall with the seasons. Deep freezes — such as the ones the region has seen the past few winters — and slow evaporation may also eventually lead to higher water levels. In fact, in 2013 before the rise in water levels, Lake Michigan was near record lows.
