Residents in Cayuga, Jefferson, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, Oswego, St. Lawrence and Wayne counties can now apply for assistance in the damages their property may have sustained following a year of flooding and high water in Lake Ontario. Up to $50,000 is available for homeowners. The news was announced by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo at the beginning of the month.
“Historic flooding along the shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River has had severe consequences for homeowners and it is vital that New York State intervene and lend a helping hand,” Governor Cuomo says. “While the State continues to focus on regionally significant rebuilding and resiliency efforts, the $20 million available for homeowners will provide much needed financial relief and is a major step forward for families recovering from these devastating floods.”
Applicants should have sustained damage between January 1, 2019, and September 20, 2019, and need to explain the damage in the application. The state is currently only evaluating applications for primary residences and will move to secondary homeownership if there is enough funding out of the original $20 million still available after the application period.
