The Lakeshore Keepers have launched a $450,000 restoration campaign to give the historic Big Sable Point Lighthouse a much-needed makeover. Built in 1867, the 112-foot lighthouse in Ludington State Park isn’t just a stunning Michigan icon — it’s a piece of maritime heritage worth saving.
Thanks to a generous matching grant from the Jeffris Family Foundation, the group has already secured $150,000, and now they’re calling on shoreline communities, boaters and history buffs to help raise the remaining $300,000 by June 30, 2028.
“Standing 112 feet tall and built in 1867, Big Sable Point Lighthouse is a remarkable symbol of Michigan’s — and America’s — maritime heritage,” says the Jeffris Family Foundation spokesperson. “We’re proud to support Lakeshore Keepers in their effort to restore and protect this landmark for future generations. Their dedication to community engagement and historic preservation aligns perfectly with our mission.”
The restoration plan includes removing old paint, repairing masonry and repainting the keeper’s dwelling to keep moisture out in order to preserve this Great Lakes treasure so future generations can enjoy.
