Learn to Crew a Tallship in South Haven

By March 13, 2017No Comments

The Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven, Michigan is not offering the typical modern cruising course: Instead, the museum will be holding a Basic Seamanship Training class aboard a replica

tallship, the Friends Good Will.

Basic Seamanship Sail Training is a four-part course, the first session taking place on March 25 from 9 a.m. to noon. The course is open to anyone over the age of 13, regardless of experience; however, organizers are looking for individuals interested in volunteering as crewmembers aboard the Friends Good Will.

The tallship replica is based on a sloop built in Michigan in 1810 that sailed the Great Lakes as a merchant, Royal Navy and U.S. Navy vessel. The modern Friends Good Will crew — outfitted in 1812 era outfits — takes groups out on scheduled sails from mid-May through mid-September. Individuals who complete Basic Seamanship Training become official crewmembers and may volunteer on the ship throughout the sailing season.
