One of the biggest events in Michigan, the Mackinac Bridge Walk, is celebrating its 60th year this summer. This year’s Bridge Walk will be held over Labor Day weekend on Monday, September 4.
Each year, the Mackinac Bridge Walk draws tens of thousands of participants who walk the span of the 5-mile bridge. The “Mighty Mac” is the third largest suspension bridge in the world. Organizers estimate that 40,000 to 65,000 people participate annually.
This year’s walk begins at 7 a.m. During the event, from 6:30 a.m. to noon, the bridge will be closed to all other traffic except for buses transporting walkers and emergency vehicles. The event is strictly a walk: Running, jogging, bicycles and rollerblades are not permitted. There will be buses transporting walkers to St. Ignace and back to the UP for a $5 fee. Once walkers complete the trek and reach Mackinaw City, they will receive a “Certificate of Completion.”
