In 1975, the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, once the largest ship on the Great Lakes, was caught in a storm so suddenly that the ill-fated crew didn’t even have time to send a distress signal. The tragedy didn’t receive much attention until the next year, when Canadian folk singer Gordon Lightfoot wrote “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”
On March 10, the Michigan Maritime Museum will host Chris Winters and Bruce Lynn, authors of The Legend Lives On: SS Edmund Fitzgerald, for a lecture and book signing. In their book, the duo uses photos and interviews to tell the story of the Fitzgerald; from her launch in 1958, to her working years as the flagship of the Columbia Transportation Division of the Olglebay Norton Company, to her tragic wreck on Lake Superior. The book also goes over various expeditions over the years that have sought to better understand the ship’s sinking.
All proceeds from book sales go towards operations at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum and historic preservation of the Whitefish Point Light-station.
The lecture begins at 6:30 p.m. and is $8 for adults and $7 for seniors.
