Michigan Increases Number of Clean Marinas by 20% in 2018

By May 17, 2018No Comments

Michigan now has 64 certified clean marinas, The Michigan Clean Marina Program announced. The number increased almost 20 percent in the first half of 2018 compared to last year.

A marina can become an official Michigan Clean Marina by using environmentally-friendly practices, protecting local wildlife and helping to increase the water quality across the state. To receive the certification, a 10-step process must be completed.

Marina representatives can participate in live classroom sessions or an online classroom session. Once they have completed the session portion, they have the chance schedule a visit to their marina by a site specialist. Attendees of a live session can complete the classroom portion in one day, allowing them to meet with a site specialist sooner.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality partnered with the Michigan Sea Grant and the Michigan Boating Industries to create the program. Its goal for 2018 is to reach 100 Clean Marinas. For more information, visit michigancleanmarina.org.
