When a new boat comes along that defies categorization, discerning skippers often become disciples for the brand.

MJM Yachts, known for offering individualistic designs, bring its envelope-pushing, epoxy composite construction techniques to outboards with the radiant 35z powerboat.

Twin Mercury Verado 300s, rather than the triples used in competing designs, boast a cruising speed of 38 mph, delivering a fuel-sipping range of 350 miles — and that’s on a 250-gallon fuel tank.

MJM achieves this combination of performance and comfortable, all-weather family boating through a unique wet prepreg, post-cure epoxy composite construction that results in a stronger, lighter and longer-lasting hull. Epoxy-impregnated Kevlar and E-glass composite construction, Core-Cell foam interiors, and encapsulated stringers and bulkheads are vacuum bagged. This process all but eliminates environmentally harmful volatile organic compounds (VOC) usually associated with traditional layup. All the parts are “baked” at 145 degrees for 24 hours, maximizing the chemical reaction curing process.

A narrower 3.5:1 length to beam ratio is a hallmark of revered naval architect Doug Zern, who pioneered the modified deep-V hull with the composite wizardry of Boston BoatWorks. This hull shape creates seakindly stability. The faster the boat goes, lifting strakes and chine flats redirect wave and wake energy. Even at 50 mph there is a noticeable absence of chine-walk.

“This sophisticated performance and finite attention to every detail is what appeals to our yachtsmen clientele,” says Walstrom Marine’s Rick Venner. “Joystick performance, outstanding response, a flush helmdeck, and the ability for the boat to provide overnight accommodations make for a very attractive package.”

Side boarding doors, a flush deck stern to companionway, and fully- opening windshields for fresh air create a sense of openness on deck. Owners can choose between roll-up Strataglass or sliding safety glass sides. An enclosed head, galley and modest overnight accommodations are found forward; the pilothouse doubles as a second cabin at night with settees converting into two full-length berths. Add in the optional Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer, full-length Bimini and HVAC for a more comfortable ride.
