Muskegon County recently completed a transaction of $5 million with Nugent Sand to acquire over 160 acres that will make up the remainder of Dune Harbor Park, whose southern section was opened to the public last year, reports MLive. The area includes 1,460 feet of lake frontage along Lake Michigan, as well as an inland lake created by sand mining operations.
According to Muskegon County Community Development Director Robert Lukens, the northern part of the park is expected to open for public use no later than March 2023, and early this year the public will be invited to weigh in on public input sessions to help create a plan for the park, which is expected to remain mostly in its natural state.
The property was purchased from Nugent Sand owners Robert Chandonnet and his daughters, Suzette Colon and Deanna Chandonnet, with a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund. “My wife, Lynne, began this dream,” Robert Chandonnet said in a prepared statement, reports MLive. “She always envisioned that this land would be a place many, many people could enjoy. Our family couldn’t be happier than to know this land will always be preserved and shared.”
