Muskegon County is seeking grant money from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund to transform a Norton Shores property into a park, according to the White Lake Beacon. The Nugent Sand property, formerly a sand mining area just south of Muskegon Lake, is 377 acres — including two inland lakes and 1,917 feet of Lake Michigan water frontage — that the county hopes to transform into a public recreational area for kayaking, fishing and walking trails.
Muskegon County residents largely seem to be in favor of the Nugent Sands initiative.
“As a child, there were woods all over that we could go explore,” resident Sherri DeBoef Chandler told mLive. “Now, so much is owned or closed off to the children in Muskegon, and this is such a beautiful property … I think it will benefit generations to come.”
