By January 24, 2014No Comments

A new Great Lakes maritime history museum is currently under construction in northwest Ohio and is slated to open in April, according to a report in The Daily Journal online, dailyjournal.net.

The report maintains most of the exhibits at the National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo, Ohio should be in place by December 2013. Exhibits will include a 160-year-old lifesaving boat from Kelleys Island, thought to be the oldest Great Lakes boat known to exist in its original construction.

The project is expected to cost nearly $12.9 million, and fundraising efforts still continue, according to The Daily Journal report. So far, almost $10.5 million has been raised, including more than $6 million in state grants and $1 million in private donations and in-kind support.

The museum will be a short boat trip from the Toledo Maritime Academy, where it is expected to be a key resource for academy students.
