New Michigan Law Allows Abandoned Boat Disposal

By October 4, 2016No Comments

Until recently, marina owners had no legal course of action to pursue if a boat was abandoned in their facilities. Therefore, the Michigan Boating Industries Association (MBIA) officially applauds governor Rick Snyder for supporting marine industry members and signing Public Act 286 into law.

Under PA 286, Michigan marinas can now sell or dispose of boats abandoned at their facilities that have no clear title or are titled out of state. A boat must be abandoned for more than 180 days before a marine business owner can step in. MBIA first proposed legislation for PA 286 in March, after feedback from members who couldn’t find a way to legally dispose of boats rotting away in their facilities.
