A new project launched by environmental group Georgian Bay Forever in collaboration with the University of Toronto aims to reduce microfibers released into Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay. The project, called Divert & Capture, is targeting household washing machines, testing a device which collects microfibers that run through a washing cycle.
The project’s three goals are focused on improving the water quality specifically in coastal communities around Georgian Bay: Diverting microplastics and microfibers from entering the water; engaging the community in hands-on cleanup; and providing public information on the issues surrounding microplastics.
The study will work with 100 to 200 Parry Sound volunteer residents who will install a filter on their washing machine, which will catch microfibers before they are washed down the drain.
