Evolution of a species.
by Gary Reich
The Ocean Alexander 70e builds upon the company’s more than 30 years of building high-quality motoryachts with luxury, comfort and long-distance passage making in its DNA.
The “e” in this bold new motoryacht’s name stands for “evolution,” and progressions in the design, engineering and style of the model are visible.
For starters, the 70e is the first Ocean Alexander to use Volvo Penta IPS pod drives — a pair of them, in fact, rated at 900 hp each. Ocean Alexander designed the 70e to be run by the owner instead of a crew, so the maneuverability and confidence these drives and joystick docking controls provide is key. Expect a top end of around 26 knots at wide-open throttle. Cruising between 14 and 18 knots will net the best fuel efficiency: Between 30 and 45 gallons per hour.
On deck is a layout that emphasizes entertaining and relaxation with a spacious aft cockpit, a hydraulic “teak beach” swim platform and a massive flybridge that’s outfitted to the nines. There’s even a quiet and secluded inset seating area up on the foredeck, replete with comfortable sofa-style seating. Below deck is a four-stateroom layout; an additional crew berth is available as an option. The main salon is the focal point for activities inside the 70e, further centered around a huge galley with an island breakfast bar and adjacent L-shaped dinette. A living room-style area is located aft of the galley with a L-shaped, sofa-style lounge and a two-person loveseat to port. Fit and finish inside and out is typical Ocean Alexander; virtually flawless joinery combines with a judicious use of high-end furnishings to provide ultimate comfort and luxury.
Abbey Heimensen with MarineMax says, “We never get over the thrill of a new discovery. When our designers bring this many exciting innovations to a new build, it’s a heady experience for us all. They’ve done a masterful job creating a boat with astonishing power, truly surprising luxury and advanced design — without sacrificing legendary Ocean Alexander stability, safety and fine engineering. What we’ve accomplished in our larger megayachts now finds a place in the 70 Evolution.”
