This summer, visitors to South Bass Island can explore the history and science of the region through a series of attractions and tours offered by the Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory.
South Bass Island Lighthouse, built in 1897 at the southwest tip of the island, is open to the public from dawn to dusk and free to the public to explore, unless otherwise noted. Free tours of the lighthouse will be offered from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 11, July 9, August 13, September 10 and October 8.
Visitors can learn about Lake Erie’s complex ecosystem through hands-on activities and aquaria at the Aquatic Visitors Center, with free tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays June 15 – August 20. There is even free fishing gear available for kids 15 years and younger to borrow for fishing off the pier.
Every Thursday June 16 through August 18, two science and history tours of Gibraltar Island will be offered at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for children and round trip fare to the island is $8.
