The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently released a study that suggests physically separating the Mississippi River and Great Lakes watersheds is the most effective way to prevent aquatic species like Asian carp from moving between the two iconic waters.
A coalition of conservation groups, including Alliance for the Great Lakes, National Wildlife Federation, Natural Resources Defense Council and the Sierra Club, echo the USACE’s findings, insisting the only option effective at stopping the transfer of invasive fish, parasites, grasses, algae and other organisms is constructing a physical barrier. USACE has previously admitted that a series of electrical barriers designed to repel Asian carp have been easily breached.
