August 13 will mark Plastic Free PIB Day on South Bass Island, Ohio, hosted by the Ohio Sea Grant, Stone Lab. The event will help heighten awareness surrounding plastic pollution in Lake Erie, and present ways individuals can help through the installation of six educational booths on the island that highlight plastic pollution problems and simple steps we can take to help prevent it.
“After years of working with island partners to reduce use of plastics, clean beaches and educate visitors, it is time to celebrate our successes as an island community,” says Jill Bartolotta, Extension educator for Ohio Sea Grant. “We are very excited to offer this education event for island residents and visitors.”
Single use, disposable plastics account for much of the waste found during beach cleanups, making alternatives an important choice for consumers. The event will offer alternatives to plastic for travel, boating and dining, and prizes will be offered after completion of each station, with one grand prize for a winner who completes all six stations.
The event is also presented in partnership with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Ohio Clean Marinas Program, the Center for Great Lakes Literacy, Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, the Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center, the Lake Erie Islands Conservancy and Eriesponsible Inc.
