The new $75 million 1 Port Street East Project to establish a new marina in Port Credit takes another step forward, with new approval from Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment for terms of reference for the required environmental assessment, reports insauga.com. The project maximizes Port Credit’s location as Lake Ontario’s deepest natural harbor and is expected to bring hundreds of new jobs to the area, as well as create a boating destination that attracts boaters from all over.

“Our goal is to create a new destination for recreation, tourism and economic development,” says Mayor Bonnie Crombie, reports insauga.com. The environmental assessment must be approved by the Ontario government, and Mississauga is looking to the provincial and federal government for funding to complete the project, which would replace the existing marina, whose lease expires in 2023.

The new marina would be built on the eastern portion of the site, and serves as a key element of the city’s broader Inspiration Port Credit Charting the Future Course Master Plan, adds insauga.com.

The deep natural harbor serves as a natural draw to the area. “That’s a unique advantage of this site as the harbour does not require regular dredging,” city staff said, reports insauga.com. “There is a trend towards bigger boats and this site can accommodate and capitalize on that trend because of the deep waters.”

Ward 1 Councillor Stephen Dasko has formed an advocacy group to help support and promote the continuation of the project, which would bring major economic benefits to Mississauga.
