Tight lines.
by Ken Kreisler
Back in 1988, Regulator Marine founders Joan and Owen Maxwell had a vision for a new center console design, one that would fulfill the need for an offshore fishing platform with a non-negotiable promise of safety and quality.
While technology has improved the materials available in today’s builds, each and every Regulator is still hand built. This means the hull is comprised of four parts with absolutely no wood found throughout. Before any boat hits the water, there are constant reviews, checks, re-checks and quality-control issues that must be satisfied way ahead of delivery to new owners.
From bow to stern, the 31 is all Regulator — rigged and ready to handle anything found in both inshore and, especially, offshore waters. It all starts up in the bow area with the anchor locker, 230-quart center forward storage, a 500-quart in-deck fishbox that can also serve as a rod locker, and a pair of 210-quart insulated fish/dry storage boxes, one found to starboard and one to port. The entire bow area has an integrated handrail. Just forward of the center console is a seat, beneath which is an insulated cooler, and fully aft is a transom fishbox and livewell.
The Regulator 31 offers a console worthy of any skipper dedicated to chasing big fish. The console is outfitted with an easily recognized T-top, one whose options include a pair of Taco 390 Outrigger bases with 18-foot telescoping poles or two 20-foot carbon fiber poles.
A long list of standard features includes factory-installed Garmin offshore electronics package, SeaStar power steering, a stand-up head, dual seats with flip-up backrests, a full tackle center and four rod holders, among many others. First-rate options to upgrade your Regulator 31 are a bow thruster, Seakeeper2 gyro, FLIR M232 thermal camera, remote-controlled LED spotlight and a host of additional choices. Just wait until you slide those throttles forward and call on a pair of Yamaha F300 four-stroke engines with Digital Electronic Controls. Those same outboards are also available with Yamaha Helm Master with Set Point.
While the Regulator 31 is all about fishing, it still can be the kind of boat that will thrill family and friends.
