Researchers Explore Chicago “Wild Reef”

By July 29, 2016No Comments

A stone’s throw away from Chicago’s skyscrapers, researchers are diving into Lake Michigan to explore Morgan Shoal — considered the closest thing to a wild coral reef near the city and home to the Silver Spray shipwreck.

The Morgan Shoal project aims to study the wildlife, geology and characteristics of Lake Michigan and is being funded by the NOAA, the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Costal Management Program. Scientists are conducting research through dives and a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). So far, they have found a number of fish species and amphibians.
