Sea-Doo Switch Cruise 21

An entry-level boat that makes a difference.

One of my favorites, “Monty Python’s Flying Circus,” typically opened the show with its tagline, “And now for something completely different,” supported by a skit of sorts.

Well, that statement came rushing back into my active memory bank when I walked over (yes, my walk is registered with the Ministry of Silly Walks) to the new Sea-Doo Switch Cruise 21.

The Sea-Doo name is one of the most recognizable names in the watersports field, thanks to its personal watercraft offerings. And now they have a line of pontoons, taking features from the personal watercraft models to enhance the pontoon experience.

The Switch Cruise 21 is not just another pontoon boat. What Sea-Doo did was create an oasis that morphs into your needs, no matter what you want to do.

Next gen

One thing the folks at Sea-Doo are focusing on is making their watercraft inviting for the next generation of boaters. The Switch Cruise is an approachable, entry-level boat, pairing an attractive price point with easy handling, low maintenance and plenty of fun on the water.

With a tri-hull design, you’ll notice the two outboard pontoons are the same length, set just a bit higher than the keel depth — and for good reason. When running at speed, the boat lifts on the center hull, thereby raising the front of the pontoons. This improves running efficiency and speed by reducing drag along the pontoons and hull bottom. The relatively flat 16-degree deadrise at the transom helps with lift, too. At slower speeds or in choppy water, the pontoons add lateral stability (think of a double outrigger canoe).

Switch up

I mentioned that the Switch Cruise can morph to your needs, and Sea-Doo figured out an easy way to do this. One is the movable, modular seats and tables. Onboard, the decking is made of plastic, non-skid panels. Pick up a panel, and the underfloor has notches in it, giving the ability to unlock seats and corner tables, re-arrange them, and then lock them back in place, all within minutes.

Inviting the whole family? Then move more seats aft to give an open forward deck for water access when anchored. Going fishing? Remove the seats completely for a wide-open fishing platform. Add in custom accessories that mount with the Sea-Doo LinQ attachments, such as fenders, a grill, cup holders and even a cooler that affixes to the swim platform.

Helm happenings

Driving the Switch Cruise is different than other boats and pontoons. Don’t look for a steering wheel because there is none. With handlebar controls akin to a personal watercraft, the pod-style starboard-side helm is not intrusive to the rest of the deck space. On the Switch Cruise 21 with the 300 TECH engine, there’s a big 10.25-inch multifunction touchscreen display, which is easy to see, even in sunlight (there is a built-in brow to help reduce glare). Nav, speed, fuel burn, distance, time to empty and depth are available on the display. A twist throttle is on the right handlebar, and under-console toggle switches for the LED lights and other needs are right there. A storage compartment in the forward section of the pod has a 12V outlet, while the glovebox has two USB ports for charging. This is also a handy place to keep a handheld VHF radio. The bolstered helm seat delivers comfort whether standing or sitting, paired with an adjustable handlebar for a customized driving position.

I was able to get some operating time to try out the handling, maneuverability and driving features. Four modes allow for operating your way: Sport, Eco, Slow and Cruise Control. This craft can pretty much stop on a dime, thanks to the Intelligent Brake and Reverse system (iBR). Debris stays out of the jet pump drive thanks to the Intelligent Debris-Free system (iDF), which forces water backwards through the pump to eliminate seaweed. The vessel was easy to dock, responded well in reverse, and gave a slight lean when heading into tight turns. Honestly, it was a blast to drive and shoot around the bay while putting the Switch through the paces.

On deck

On deck, the layout is simple, carefully thought out and well constructed. Railings, gates and Bimini frame are all welded aluminum, adding to the rigidity of the hull and solid feel when holding on. Add a sunshade extension or double Bimini for protection from the sun. Clear-view panels along the rails offer visibility outward when relaxing onboard, as well as assisting when docking or loading on the trailer.

What I like is the extended swim platform, accessed from the aft corner doors for easy and safe entry to the water. Spend the afternoon on the hook, or beach it at your favorite sandbar. Climb aboard with the retractable boarding ladder. With no exposed propeller, a jet-drive boat reduces the risk of injury, giving first-time owners added peace of mind as they get comfortable on the water.

Below deck

There’s action below the deck, too. Midship is the Rotax 1.6 litre, 3-cylinder engine coupled to the jet pump. This fuel-injected, internal combustion engine uses a closed-loop cooling system, preventing saltwater from entering the block. With boosted power from the supercharger, there’s an instant response when you twist the throttle. The 300-hp engine gives the speed that owners desire, and jumps to approximately 40 mph (of course, it will depend on load and weather conditions).

Also below deck is a huge storage area that can fit the table, first aid kit, transom light pole, life jackets and more.

Need to know

With a maximum capacity rating of nine people, or a maximum load of 1,485 pounds, the Switch Cruise has room for a family outing, storage for fishing gear and capacity for watersports.

In 2025, Sea-Doo issued a recall on the Switch, which the company has since addressed with a series of safety enhancements. These updates include added sealant materials and gaskets in the pontoons and hull, new safety and warning decals, a revised safety video, and increased emphasis on proper operation, such as avoiding overloading the bow while cruising.

As with any boat, safety ultimately comes down to awareness and responsible use. Understanding the risks and being knowledgeable about boating safety is part of enjoying time on the water. The Switch is a great bay, river or lake boat, but is not meant for rough waters.
