Tartan Sailing Yachts, Legacy Downeast Yachts and AMP, all under the Tartan-Legacy manufacturing operation, are now part of Seattle Yachts International after being purchased by Marine Manufacturing Group LLC. The subsidiary was formed for the purchase.
Tartan-Legacy, which has been building boats out of Ohio for 60 years, had fallen on rocky financial times before Seattle Yachts, also a dealer for Tartan-Legacy, completed the purchase.
Peter Whiting, Seattle Yachts’ managing partner, consulted his friend Phil Friedman, the CEO of Palmer Johnson Yachts, on the best move.
“Our main goal at Tartan-Legacy is, in the short term, to improve processes and through-put of the operation, while maintaining the high quality of construction, fit and finish for which these brands have been known,” says Whiting. “We will also, by the way, deliver these rugged, seaworthy, comfortable and good-looking cruising yachts at compelling prices.”
Operations for Tartan-Legacy will now be housed in 76,000-square-feet close to the original location in Painesville, Ohio.
