The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Interpretation and Education division now owns a new inflatable planetarium dome and welcomes schools within 50 miles to sign up to host ranger-led visits for its students.

Purchased with a grant from the National Park Foundation, the 17-foot-wide, 12-foot-tall dome provides an immersive experience for students to observe the night sky and Great Lakes ecosystem with 360-degree views, as well as activity stations to further student’s hands-on experience.

The program is offered free, educators are only required to have a space that can fit the large dome, such as a school gymnasium. Currently two different themes are offered: Sharing Star Stories includes an interactive view of the night sky, while Great Lakes from Below offers underwater footage of the Great Lakes. The programs are designed for third through fifth grade, but educators can arrange for students from other grades to join in.
