A new breed of center console.
by Craig Ritchie
One of the newest nameplates on the Great Lakes, Sportsman Boats, launched its first hull in February 2012.
Since then, the Summerville, South Carolina-based boatbuilder has enjoyed tremendous growth thanks to its new breed of center consoles, which includes the remarkable 312 Open.
Stretching 31 feet and 2 inches in overall length, the 312 Open neatly blends luxurious accommodations and innovative amenities with impressive performance. Large, upholstered lounge seats in the bow feature innovative tilt-up backrests that can be adjusted to multiple angles, including forward facing or laid flat to accommodate extra guests. With the adjacent console cooler seat, this arrangement forms a private conversation area in the bow or — at the push of a button — converts to a comfortable dining space with an electrically actuated table that lifts from the floor.
“This boat represents one of the most innovative values on the market today for ride, features and configuration,” says Scott Hossack, at Hossack Marine Boat Sales.
The console features a lockable storage space complete with a porcelain head and shower. The fully-featured helm comes with dual Simrad 16-inch GPS units and a stainless steering wheel with turning knob and Optimus tilt power steering.
Overhead, a fiberglass T-top with LED lighting provides a break from the sun, while a wide fiberglass leaning post includes a built-in tackle center with tons of storage space. A side entry door provides a convenient point of entry, while LED lighting throughout offers added safety when operating early or late in the day. There’s even a rear fold-down seat, pull-up cleats and a built-in swim platform with a four-step boarding ladder. Add a radar set and available Optimus joystick control for the twin Yamaha 300s, and you have everything needed in a Great Lakes dayboat.
With those twin Yamaha 300s and its massive 240-gallon fuel tank, the 312 Open is capable of going anywhere on the lake and getting there PDQ, reaching 52 mph at wide-open throttle. Pull it back to a more leisurely 30 mph at 3,500 rpm and this boat will cruise all day while delivering fuel economy in the range of 1.6 mpg.
