In June, the U.S. and Canadian governments released the “State of the Great Lakes 2017” report, an assessment of the health of the Lakes.
Overall, the Great Lakes are assessed as “fair and unchanging,” according to the report; however, the “Nutrients and Algae” and “Invasive Species” sections were ranked as “unchanging to deteriorating” and “poor/deteriorating,” respectively, particularly for Lake Erie.
“While progress to restore and protect the Great Lakes has been made, including the reduction of toxic chemicals, we are still facing challenges with issues such as invasive species and nutrients,” the report says.
