President Trump signed the Modern Fish Act (formally known as the Modernizing Recreational Fisheries Management Act of 2018) on December 31, 2018. The Senate unanimously passed the bill on December 17, 2018.
The bill aims to improve and expand access to federal and recreational saltwater fisheries. Inspired by the Morris-Deal Commission Report that was released in 2014, the bill also will focus on sustainability and conservation.
“Millions of American families take part in saltwater recreational fishing and boating activities and support multi-billion dollar industries that generate hundreds of thousands of jobs in our country,” says Jeff Angers, president of the Center for Sportfishing Policy.
“The Modern Fish Act is a big step forward in recognizing the value of today’s recreational fishing,” says BoatU.S. Manager of Government Affairs David Kennedy. “It will help improve public access to America’s federal waters and management of fish stock, promote conservation of natural marine resources, and spur economic growth by fixing key issues in the law governing marine fisheries.”
