Three historic Michigan lighthouses will receive repairs and restoration with the help of $126,667 in Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program (MLAP) grants from the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office.

“Dozens of lighthouses stand sentinel along Michigan’s shorelines and represent an important piece of Michigan’s maritime history. And with the summer travel season fast approaching, lighthouses offer a unique opportunity for tourists to discover and explore off-the-beaten-path destinations,” says Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer Martha MacFarlane-Faes. “Through our lighthouse preservation program, we can help restore these beacons, preserving their beauty and keeping them shining bright for years to come.”

Crisp Point Light Historical Society, North Manitou Light Keepers and St. Clair County Park and Recreation will receive thousands of dollars to help fund planned projects to preserve and repair the lighthouses for visitors for years to come. To be eligible for the funding, each applicant had to have at least 50% of the awarded amount in matching funds.

$60,000 of the grant funding will be used to restore the exterior of Crisp Point Lighthouse on Lake Superior near Newbury, Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula. $50,000 is planned for the restoration and rehabilitation of the watch deck of North Manitou Shoal Lighthouse on Lake Michigan outside of Leland Township, Michigan. The final $16,667 is allocated to help restore the watch and lantern rooms at Fort Gratiot Lighthouse in Port Huron, Michigan.
