The Michigan Maritime Museum is seeking volunteer crew members for its tall ship Friends Good Will for the 2026 sailing season. Step back in time and sail a replica of an 1810 merchant tall ship that once sailed the Great Lakes! Volunteers will train with the Museum’s Basic Seamanship Training program that includes both classroom and on-water instruction, and will take part in hands-on sailing experiences, learning seamanship skills, sail handling, setting sails, a solid introduction to sailing a tall ship, and share the rich maritime heritage of the region with museum guests, students and fellow sailors.
“The more you sail, the more you learn!” says Captain Bob Harnish, fleet captain of the museum’s fleet. “This is an incredible opportunity to experience sailing a traditionally rigged ship while keeping Michigan’s maritime history alive.”
Sailing excursions take place up to four times a day, seven days a week, offering volunteers plenty of opportunity to grow their skillset. Training dates are set for April 18 and 19, and May 16 and 17. Volunteers must be 18 years or older and must complete all training sessions. The program is free to attend.
