Why One Group Wants to Sink a Ship — On Purpose

By November 17, 2018No Comments

A group in Port Washington, Wisconsin, wants to sink a ship in Lake Michigan intentionally. Yes, you read that correctly!

The plan from the Shipwreck Education and Preservation Alliance (SEAPA) is said to create an abundance of artificial reefs and thus a great environment for fish. The group is working with Artificial Reefs international on the case. The ship would also provide researchers the chance to study invasive species and algae.

Purposefully sinking the ship would cost around $9.9 million. The area projected for the sunken 200- to 900-foot vessel is about two miles offshore.
