A smooth-riding cat for exploring the Great Lakes.

by Craig Ritchie

Catamarans are said to deliver many advantages over V-hulls, including a smoother ride, greater stability, superior fuel economy and a shallower draft for navigating skinny waters.

But those are only a few of the reasons World Cat believes its new 296DC dual console might just be the ultimate Great Lakes dayboat.

“The World Cat 296DC and its infamous catamaran hull design has the ability to handle the Great Lakes better than any other dual console on the market,” says World Cat Marketing Manager Wyatt Lane. “Combine this with amazing features, interior room and amenities and you have the last boat you would ever need to tackle any of the Great Lakes.”
Stretching 29 feet, 1 inch in overall length and riding on a wide 9-foot, 6-inch beam, the 296DC is among the most spacious dual consoles in its class. The massive bow seating area offers plenty of room for six adults to stretch out in comfort, while full wraparound upholstered coaming and a generous interior depth make these the best place to stretch out and enjoy the summer sun.
Enter the main cockpit through the boat’s large walk- through windshield and you’re greeted by twin, double-wide seats for the driver and navigator, the helm seat with a flip-up bolster. A bi-fold door between the console allows the bow to be closed-off altogether, providing greater comfort when running early or late in the season. The passenger console contains a changing room with a 23-inch-wide entry door and ample space to house an available head with a 15-gallon holding tank. But it’s the driver who gets spoiled in this boat, with a large helm console that has space for a 12-inch flush-mount MFD, power-assisted hydraulic steering and a 15-inch stainless wheel with a turning knob. Overhead, a fiberglass top with a powder-coated frame and overhead lights provides protection from the midday sun.
The main cockpit offers still more seating options, including twin rear-facing seats on seat boxes and dual aft fold-down seats with backrest cushions. Maximum power for the 296DC is twin 300-hp outboards, which deliver a WOT top-speed of about 53 mph and an average fuel economy of about 1.0 mpg.
