Houghton’s Canal Colors Festival returns October 1 – 3 with an expanded lineup of fall events, including an attempt to break its Plaidurday world record, a larger Brew Street, a new lumberjack fashion show and competition, and a five-minute pie-eating contest.

The second-annual festival combines Plaidurday, Brew Street, the Keweenaw Color Run and Houghton Fall Fest along the Portage Canal. Organizers will attempt to surpass the 2023 record of 1,745 people gathered in plaid for a “Plaidurday” group photo at Houghton High School.

Friday’s Brew Street adds participating downtown businesses, live music, food trucks and Social District drinks, while the Lumberjack Lovin’ contest will feature up to 10 contestants competing for $400 in Keweenaw Cash. Saturday brings the 5K Color Run, Fall Fest, giant pumpkins, tractor rides and sled dogs, followed by the Keweenaw Pie Eating Contest.
