The Lake Erie Islands are finding a better way to handle one of boating’s less glamorous byproducts: Shrinkwrap. This past spring, the Ohio Clean Marinas Program teamed up with local marinas, businesses and residents of South Bass Island to collect and recycle winter boat shrinkwrap rather than send it to the landfill.
Through the Ohio Shrink Wrap Recycling program, South Bass Island boaters could conveniently recycle their shrinkwrap, once zippers, straps and vents were removed, at designated collection sites. In all, the effort kept 1,400 pounds of shrinkwrap from ending up in the landfill.
That plastic won’t go to waste, either. It will be recycled into durable products such as wheel chocks and guardrail blocks used along Ohio roadways.
