The Michigan Supreme Court overturned a key Line 5 Permit approved in 2023 that would have enabled Enbridge to build a four-mile oil pipeline tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac, ruling that the Michigan Public Service Commission violated the Michigan Environmental Protection Act (MEPA) and the public trust doctrine.
The ruling is a victory for tribal rights and tribal communities and others who have opposed the 645-mile long oil pipeline.
“We will continue standing together because we know that our knowledge, our science, our voices and our treaty rights must be brought forward. Because protecting these waters is simply not an environmental issue, it is an obligation to those who came before us and those yet unborn. We must protect the Great Lakes for all generations,” said Whitney Gravelle, Bay Mills Indian Community president, reports Fox 21.
