A new book spotlights Ernest Hemingway and the profound influence of his summers spent in Michigan. “Picturing Hemingway’s Michigan,” written by historian Michael R. Federspiel, pairs more than 250 historic photographs with excerpts from letters and journals to trace the author’s 22 summers spent in the Little Traverse Bay region.

The book examines how northern Michigan — particularly the Walloon Lake area — shaped Hemingway’s early worldview and later literary voice, while also documenting the region’s transformation from a lumber outpost to a popular resort destination. The 216-page paperback offers fresh visual and historical context, underscoring Michigan’s enduring role in the Nobel Prize winner’s life and legacy.
