Restoration Work Begins on Big Sable Lighthouse

By October 19, 2026No Comments

Lakeshore Keepers will start restoration work at Big Sable Point Lighthouse this fall, with a major restoration project planned for 2027. Work this fall will focus on chimney repairs and restoration of the north porch foundation wall, with Northern Restoration & Waterproof Systems Inc. completing the project.

“Northern Restoration won the bid for this job because of their prior work experience at lighthouses across the state, including at Tawas Point Lighthouse,” says Jack Greve, executive director of Lakeshore Keepers. “This fall project will support the $450,000 Big Sable restoration project planned for 2027 by allowing the north porch to serve as an access point for guests visiting the lighthouse next season. With this work, we will now be able to guide the traffic flow safely in and out of Big Sable.”

Fall restoration work will not affect the lighthouse’s current operating schedule, and is an important first step toward a larger restoration project in 2027 that includes removing the existing paint from the Keepers’ Quarters, removing and replacing worn brick, repointing the masonry, and repainting the building. The project is also now being outlined to include repairs to the lighthouse’s cladded tower. The project is expected to cost $450,000 and is vital to preserving the historic lighthouse, which will celebrate its 160th anniversary in 2027.

“Preserving Big Sable is a significant undertaking, and these projects are part of our long-term commitment to maintaining the lighthouse for future generations,” adds Greve. “We are excited to begin this work now and continue that momentum into Big Sable’s 160th anniversary year.”
