The U.S. Brig Niagara has returned home to the Erie Maritime Musuem in Erie, Pennsylvania, following a major one-year capital repair and refit project at Bristol Marine’s Sample’s Shipyard in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
The 1988-built replica of the War of 1812 flagship underwent extensive structural preservation, including new hull planking, redesigned waterway timbers and deck caulking. The ship also received two new Tier III engines and updated systems designed to improve performance, safety and maneuverability. After completing the work, Niagara sailed approximately 2,000 nautical miles back to Pennsylvania, arriving home in July.
The next phase includes re-masting and up-rigging, followed by a Coast Guard-required inclining test and Certificate of Inspection process. Once certified, Niagara will return to sailing service, continuing its mission of training future mariners, educating visitors and preserving the legacy of the Battle of Lake Erie.
