Volvo Penta Reveals New IPS Hybrid System

By June 15, 2026No Comments

Volvo Penta announced details of its new D13 IPS Hybrid yacht propulsion system that it plans to introduce in late 2026. The fully integrated hybrid-electric platform builds on Volvo Penta IPS technology to offer a complete helm-to-propeller solution that delivers near-silent operation and intuitive control, reports Boating Industry Canada

The system combines propulsion, electric motors, batteries, energy management and controls into one package, making it simple for captains to select between electric, hybrid and crossover modes. High-capacity batteries power onboard amenities without the need for a noisy generator.

The D13 IPS Hybrid is compatible for use with HVO100, a renewable paraffinic fuel that can reduce emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional diesel. The system also has a compact after treatment system that complies with IMOIII, the toughest emission legislation. All components of the system are connected through Volvo Penta’s Electronic Vessel Control system so features like Joystick Driving, Assisted Docking, Autopilot and Glass Cockpit operate seamlessly regardless of drive mode, offering a one-stop-shop approach to a complete hybrid electric yacht propulsion solution that supports more efficient yachting with a seamless and easy onboard experience.
